The Mill Creek Through the Decades: 1980s Collection has a ton of great movies at an affordable price. He’s also one of my favorite performers of all time and I wish he’d found the help and peace he needed, because he only made it 43 years in this reality and truly deserved a long and happy life. Harry Crumb is a bumbling and inept private investigator who is hired to solve the kidnapping of a young heiress which hes not expected to solve because his employer is the mastermind behind the kidnapping. Candy suffered severe anxiety and panic attacks throughout his life and self-medicated with alcohol, eating, smoking and occasional drug use. He refused to work with them for five years until Wagons East, which sadly was the last film he’d make. He believed that TriStar Pictures’ poor marketing of this film was the reason why it bombed. John Candy would make this, Uncle Buck, Speed Zone and The Rocket Boy in 1989. Jennifer’s stepmother Helen (Annie Potts) is having an affair with tennis coach Vince Barnes (Tim Thomerson) as well as Eliot, and they’re all trying to get all the money for themselves. Helped by Jennifer’s sister Nikki (Shawnee Smith), he soon discovers that there’s a lot going on. The boss there, Eliot Draisen (Jeffrey Jones, never the hero), actually did the kidnapping, so he hires out the worst detective they have: Harry Crumb (Candy), the grandson of the company’s founder. When model Jennifer Downing (Renée Coleman, A League of Their Own and the evil leaper Alia on Quantum Leap) is kidnapped, her father (Barry Corbin) visits the detective agency Crumb & Crumb.

He also wears several disguises throughout the film that, in my opinion, played to stereotypes in poor taste.Directed by Paul Flaherty (brother of Joe - who shows up as a doorman in a memorable part of this film - and director of 18 Again! and Clifford, as well as a writer on SCTV, Maniac Mansion and several Martin Short projects) and written by Robert Conte and Peter Wortmann (who wrote The Breed and Who Do You Love together), Who’s Harry Crumb? is the kind of movie that would be a failure were it to star anyone other than John Candy, a comedy force of nature who makes it successful by sheer force of talent and will. Perhaps that will work for other people but for me it just rubbed me the wrong way. Instead he almost has a swagger and confidence in spite of his ineptitude. Sure Harry creates messes and blunders but without the child-like innocence.

Perhaps it’s unfair of me to make the comparison but this wasn’t present in Who’s Harry Crumb. There was a child-like innocence to him in that movie that kept you hooked into him as he created one mess after another. In his role in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (my absolute favorite John Candy movie) he played a guy who was an overbearing loud-mouth but you still knew he had a kind heart and you couldn’t help but excuse his antics. But unlike other John Candy roles I’ve seen, he never struck me as lovable or someone that I really wanted to root for in the movie. Compared to the virtual parade of low-life’s in this movie he is a saint. The supporting cast includes Shawnee Smith, Annie Potts, and Jeffrey. He’s a decent enough guy, don’t get me wrong. Candy stars as Harry Crumb, a bumbling private detective, who's hired to solve the kidnapping of famed model Jennifer Downing. Part of the problem for me was that I never really found myself caring for Harry Crumb.
But I never really got hooked into it as much as I was hoping. Namely one about getting out from other people’s shadows and finding your own talents and worth in your own way.
